A beautiful lithograph by Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979), who, with her husband Robert Delaunay (1885-1941), was one of the pioneers of abstraction in the early 20th century, even creating a movement dubbed “orphism” by Guillaume Apollinaire. An abstraction dominated by color, often arranged in interacting circles.
This work, Cinéma, dated from the 70s, is a rare plate by the artist. It is both rare and highly original in his work, as it has a real-life referent: the cinema, or more precisely, a film projection. The circles, so common in Delaunay's work, represent projector lenses. The triangle at the top left of the composition could be the beam of light coming out of the projector, bringing the image to life on the screen. In this rare plate, the two pillars of Sonia Delaunay's art are brought together: color and light. It should be added that this light is no longer that of the sun (which literally fascinated Robert Delaunay at the beginning of the 20th century), but rather that of the darkroom. This work is fascinating, because the great abstract artist Sonia Delaunay makes an exception here with this explicit reference to reality. This is the power of cinema.
