A very beautiful etching, dated 1950, the artist, who had just arrived in Paris (a few months earlier) was introduced to the practice of engraving by Desjobert, who run an important workshop. Inventive, Zao Wou-ki quickly excelled in the various techniques. The etching that we offer is square in format, a first particularity. 
It is representative of the unique style of Zao Wou-ki in the 50s. The artist composed several works on the theme of the landscape and the sun. Here, the star is represented on the left. A circle on the background is enough to affirm its monumentality. This was a particular period, very much in demand, as Zao Wou-Ki had not yet "moved on" to abstraction. 
The composition is sprinkled with landscape elements: sprigs of trees that appear to be as tall as trees. There is a captivating poetic herbarium here. 
The grasses shrink towards the bottom of the composition because Zao Wou-Ki represents, in a rare way, a space in depth.
They are also reminiscent of the calligraphic inscriptions on ancient Chinese bronzes (such as those of the Shang Dynasty, 1570 to 1045 BC). It should be noted that Zao mastered the art of Chinese calligraphy from an early age, initiated by his grandfather.
Our photograph does not do justice to the "almond" green of this composition. A very soft, faded color that adds a note of reality to this landscape by Zao Wou-Ki.
