The collection of poems Les Illuminations, a mix of prose and free verse, was written by the poet Arthur Rimbaud between 1872 and 1875 during his journey through Europe, alongside the poet Paul Verlaine, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship. He embodies the rebellious essence of his poetry, where every word seems to subvert established meaning. The term "illuminations" evokes colored engravings, a desire to reproduce reality while adorning it with bright colors, like medieval illuminations. This subtle metaphor invites the reader to explore the play of light and color in Rimbaud's pen. Dynamism also permeates his poetic style, where motifs of verticality and circularity mingle with evocations of the distant horizon.
Our work is emblematic of the obvious affinity between Sonia Delaunay and the literary work of Arthur Rimbaud. Sonia Delaunay creates a circular rhythm with semi-circles and arcs of deep black, complemented by soft colors that seem to evoke halos of light. The fine hatching and black lines, enhanced by the etching technique, accentuate the colors and create a striking contrast with the radiant luminosity of the work.
