Traces of tape on reverse side
Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979), who needs no introduction, was with her husband Robert (1885-1941), one of the pioneers of abstraction in the early 1910s. This beautiful engraving takes up the great principles of her pictorial universe: circular forms: half circles, quarter circles whose colors vary. Quadrangular shapes bring stability. A vertical axis organizes the composition. On each side of this axis, the colors differ; thus, a portion of green circle in the right part becomes gray in the left one. There is continuity and rupture. The work is built on this principle. Delaunay conceives her work geometrically but brings variation and discontinuity. She gives great importance to the texture of the color, creating a grid, made of hatchings with a pencil look, bringing life and vibration to the color. The hatchings are oblique or orthogonal, recalling the wefts of fabrics and the textile work of the artist, in the design of clothing or costumes of shows.
