Created in 1957, Les Hespérides belongs to the final period of Atlan’s career, when he was recognized as one of the major figures of postwar lyrical abstraction. The title refers to the Greek myth of the Hesperides, nymphs who guarded the gods’ garden, whose golden apples symbolized immortality. Without literally illustrating the myth, Atlan conveys its poetic and cosmic dimension through the rhythm of his lines and the vibration of colors.
The gestural strength of the black stroke acts as a framework, while the colored areas evoke a space that is both earthly and celestial.
