Yaacov Agam is an Israeli artist born in 1928 in Rishon LeZion. A major figure in kinetic and op art, he has spent more than seventy years developing a body of work based on movement, perception, and viewer participation.
Born into an observant Jewish family and the son of a rabbi, Agam was raised in an environment deeply influenced by spirituality. From 1946 to 1948, he studied at the Bezalel School in Jerusalem under the direction of Mordecai Ardon, where he explored color theory and the principles of Constructivism. Alongside his artistic studies, he worked as a graphic designer for several advertising agencies.
In November 1951, Agam moved to Paris, then one of the leading centers of the European avant-garde. He attended the abstract art studio led by Jean Dewasne and met Fernand Léger and Auguste Herbin. During this period, he began his pioneering research into kinetic art and developed a visual language entirely focused on the transformation of the image.
Unlike many kinetic artists whose works depend on mechanical motion, Agam creates perceptual movement generated by the viewer’s own movement in front of the artwork. As the angle of vision changes, forms and colors continuously transform, making the viewer an essential participant in the visual experience. Through this approach, Agam introduced an element of unpredictability into his work, which he associated with the idea of a “fourth dimension.”
Since the 1970s, his practice has expanded considerably to include paintings, prints, sculptures, monumental environments, architectural projects, and video works, a medium he was among the first artists to use in France. Instantly recognizable through their geometric rhythms and vibrant colors, his works explore the relationship between space, time, and movement.
Featured in numerous international public and private collections, Yaacov Agam occupies a singular place in the history of postwar art. His work continues to engage with contemporary explorations of perception and interaction while maintaining a deeply original spiritual and experimental dimension.
