Biography

Alex Katz, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1927, is one of the major figures in contemporary American painting and one of the leading representatives of postwar figuration. Educated at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York and later at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, he developed early on a singular pictorial language, immediately recognizable for its graphic elegance, formal clarity, and acute sense of presence.

Beginning in the 1950s, at a time when the New York art scene was dominated by Abstract Expressionism, Alex Katz chose to reintroduce the human figure, portraiture, landscape, and scenes of everyday life into the very center of painting.
