Alex KATZ

Biography

Alex Katz, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1927, is one of the major figures in contemporary American painting and one of the leading representatives of postwar figuration. Educated at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York and later at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, he developed early on a singular pictorial language, immediately recognizable for its graphic elegance, formal clarity, and acute sense of presence.

Beginning in the 1950s, at a time when the New York art scene was dominated by Abstract Expressionism, Alex Katz chose to reintroduce the human figure, portraiture, landscape, and scenes of everyday life into the very center of painting. His work is distinguished by large areas of flat color, frontal compositions, cinematic cropping, and a deliberate simplification of form. This aesthetic, at once radical and refined, anticipated certain aspects of Pop Art while maintaining a deeply painterly dimension.

His portraits, often monumental in scale, depict friends, artists, poets, dancers, and figures from New York’s cultural world. His wife, Ada Katz, his muse and recurring model since the late 1950s, occupies a central place in his work. Through her image, Alex Katz explores the face, the gaze, posture, light, and the passage of time with remarkable economy.

The artist is also widely known for his landscapes, flowers, bathing scenes, views of Maine, and compositions inspired by nature. In these works, painting becomes a space of immediate perception, poised between abstraction and figuration, where light, color, and surface play a central role. Alex Katz does not seek to tell a story, but rather to capture an apparition: a suspended moment, a silhouette, an atmosphere, a mental image.

His work holds an important place in the history of modern and contemporary art, at the intersection of American figurative painting, contemporary portraiture, Pop aesthetics, visual minimalism, and image culture. His works — paintings, drawings, prints, screenprints, lithographs, aquatints, engravings, and original editions — are today highly sought after by international collectors for their visual power, timeless modernity, and remarkable stylistic consistency.

Represented in numerous public and museum collections around the world, Alex Katz has been the subject of many solo exhibitions in major institutions. His work is held in leading American and international museums, confirming his status as an essential artist of the second half of the twentieth century and the twenty-first century.

Classical in his attachment to portraiture and profoundly modern in his treatment of the image, Alex Katz has built an instantly recognizable body of work, marked by great elegance, in which painting engages with photography, film, fashion, advertising, and contemporary visual culture. His refined, luminous, and sophisticated style has established him as one of the most important American figurative artists of his generation.

In Alex Katz’s work, apparent simplicity is always the result of an extremely controlled construction. His figures may seem to be caught in the moment, but they belong to a painting that is carefully conceived, built on framing, cropping, light, and surface. It is precisely this tension between visual immediacy and formal sophistication that gives his work its singular place in the history of American figuration. Neither truly Pop nor simply realist, Alex Katz has developed an art of presence: a silent, frontal, elegant painting in which the contemporary image recovers the permanence of classical portraiture.
