Born in 1941 in Château-Arnoux, in southeastern France, Bernar Venet has developed one of the most distinctive practices in contemporary art. From an early stage, he moved beyond traditional painting to explore ideas of chance, matter, mathematics, order and disorder. His tar paintings, reliefs and experimental works of the early 1960s already pointed toward an artistic language based less on representation than on systems, concepts and process.
Venet’s move to New York in 1966 marked a turning point. There, he became closely connected to the worlds of Minimalism and Conceptual Art, engaging with artists such as Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt and Dan Flavin. Scientific language and mathematics became central to his work: diagrams, equations and formulas were transformed into visual material, challenging conventional notions of expression and authorship.
Following a deliberate pause in his artistic activity during the 1970s, Bernar Venet returned to sculpture and increasingly turned to steel. Straight Lines, Angles, Arcs and Indeterminate Lines soon became the core of a highly recognizable sculptural vocabulary. His monumental steel sculptures openly embrace weight, tension and gravity, often creating a sense of instability that seems to place order and disorder in constant negotiation.
That tension has become one of the defining qualities of Venet’s work. In his large Corten steel sculptures, mathematical precision coexists with physical force, imbalance and chance. Geometry is no longer abstract or detached; it becomes spatial, bodily and dramatic, reshaping the viewer’s perception of the surrounding environment.
Works by Bernar Venet are held in major museum, public and private collections internationally and are frequently installed in architectural and urban settings. In 2014, he founded the Venet Foundation in Le Muy, France, a site dedicated both to his own work and to his important collection of Minimal and Conceptual Art. The grounds also serve as a permanent setting for many of his large-scale sculptures.
Across more than six decades, Bernar Venet has continued to investigate the relationship between form, material, mathematics and physical space. From early conceptual works to monumental steel Arcs and Indeterminate Lines, his work has become an important reference in the history of modern and contemporary sculpture.
