Gérard SCHNEIDER

Biography

Gérard Schneider (1896–1986) was one of the major figures of Lyrical Abstraction and the New School of Paris. Born in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, he settled permanently in Paris in 1922 after studying at the École nationale des Arts décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts.

After an early period influenced by Post-Impressionism and Surrealism, Gérard Schneider gradually embraced abstract art. Beginning in the 1940s, he developed a free, highly gestural style in which color, movement, and emotion replaced any interest in figurative representation.

Alongside Hans Hartung, Pierre Soulages, and Georges Mathieu, Schneider played a major role in the renewal of European abstraction after World War II. His work is characterized by broad brushstrokes, powerful contrasts, and a strong sense of spontaneity.

Deeply inspired by music, Schneider began using the title Opus for many of his paintings from 1945 onward, emphasizing the importance of rhythm and improvisation in his work. His compositions seek a balance between energy, color, and space.

Gérard Schneider quickly gained international recognition. He participated in the Venice Biennale, the first Documenta in Kassel in 1955, and exhibited extensively in Europe, the United States, and Japan.

In addition to painting, Schneider created an important body of original prints, including lithographs and serigraphs. These graphic works extend his exploration of color, gesture, and abstraction and are highly sought after by collectors of modern and postwar art.

Today, Gérard Schneider artworks are held in major public and private collections around the world and occupy an important place in the history of 20th-century French abstract art.

The Le Coin des Arts gallery in Paris, specializing in original prints, lithographs, serigraphs, and School of Paris artists, presents works by Gérard Schneider, giving collectors the opportunity to discover his gestural abstraction through his graphic works and limited editions.
