Follow Valerio ADAMI
Born in 1935 in Bologna, Italy, Valerio Adami is considered one of the leading figures of the postwar European art scene. A painter, draftsman, and printmaker, he developed over the decades a body of work that is instantly recognizable and established himself as one of the major representatives of Narrative Figuration.
He began his artistic training in Milan, where from 1951 to 1954 he studied in the studio of Achille Funi at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. His early works, marked by Expressionism, carry the memory of postwar Italy.
During the Salon de Mai in Paris in 1952, he met the painters Roberto Matta and Wifredo Lam, who would have a decisive influence on his artistic evolution. Fascinated by Surrealism, Cubism, and the new forms of postwar visual storytelling, Adami developed from the 1960s onward a pictorial language that became immediately recognizable: bold black outlines structure the image and enclose areas of pure, vibrant color, without shadow or modeling.
Yet behind this apparent graphic clarity, at the crossroads of comic art, Pop Art, and modern painting, lies a work of remarkable intellectual richness. Adami’s paintings combine autobiography, literature, music, philosophy, politics, and art history in a constant dialogue between image and thought. Open to multiple interpretations, they attracted the attention of philosophers and writers such as Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Jean-François Lyotard, Italo Calvino, and Antonio Tabucchi.
Adami also distinguished himself through his ability to combine art and literature. He collaborated with many renowned writers, including Joyce Mansour and Octavio Paz, for whom he illustrated several books. This interaction with the literary world enriched his artistic language, allowing him to explore philosophical themes in his work.
During the 1970s and 1980s, his work continued to evolve by incorporating references to popular culture, the media, and consumer society. While maintaining his distinctive pictorial language, Adami developed a more critical reflection on the contemporary world, addressing themes related to memory, power, war, and the transformations of modern society.
Throughout his career, he exhibited at some of the world’s leading institutions, including the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His works are now included in major public and private collections around the world.
A true master of line and color, Valerio Adami profoundly influenced the history of contemporary European figurative art. His paintings and prints continue to captivate art enthusiasts and collectors through their unique balance of intellectual sophistication, graphic strength, and visual emotion.
