Follow Alex KATZ
Alex Katz, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1927, is one of the major figures of contemporary American painting and a leading representative of post-war figuration. Trained at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York and later at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, he developed at an early stage a highly distinctive pictorial language, immediately recognisable for its graphic elegance, formal clarity and acute sense of presence.
From the 1950s onwards, at a time when the New York art scene was largely dominated by Abstract Expressionism, Alex Katz chose to bring the human figure, portraiture, landscape and scenes of everyday life back to the centre of painting. His work is characterised by broad areas of flat colour, frontal compositions, cinematic framing and a deliberate simplification of form. This aesthetic, at once radical and refined, anticipated certain aspects of Pop Art while retaining a deeply painterly dimension.
His portraits, often monumental in scale, depict friends, artists, poets, dancers and figures from New York cultural life. His wife, Ada Katz, his muse and recurring model since the late 1950s, holds an essential place within his œuvre. Through her image, Alex Katz explores the face, the gaze, attitude, light and the passage of time with remarkable economy of means.
The artist is also widely recognised for his landscapes, flowers, bathing scenes, views of Maine and compositions inspired by nature. In these works, painting becomes a space of immediate perception, situated between abstraction and figuration, where light, colour and surface play a central role. Alex Katz does not seek to narrate, but rather to capture an apparition: a suspended instant, a silhouette, an atmosphere, a mental image.
His work occupies an important place in the history of modern and contemporary art, at the crossroads of American figurative painting, contemporary portraiture, Pop aesthetics, visual minimalism and the culture of the image. His works — paintings, drawings, prints, screenprints, lithographs, aquatints, engravings and original editions — are today highly sought after by international collectors for their visual strength, timeless modernity and remarkable stylistic coherence.
Represented in numerous public and museum collections throughout the world, Alex Katz has been the subject of many solo exhibitions in major institutions. His work is held in leading American and international museums, confirming his status as an essential artist of the second half of the twentieth century and the twenty-first century.
Both classical in his attachment to portraiture and profoundly modern in his treatment of the image, Alex Katz has created an immediately identifiable body of work, marked by great elegance, in which painting enters into dialogue with photography, cinema, fashion, advertising and contemporary visual culture. His pared-down, luminous and sophisticated style has made him one of the most important American figurative artists of his generation.
In Alex Katz’s œuvre, apparent simplicity is always the result of an extremely controlled construction. His figures may appear to have been seized in the instant, yet they belong to a painting that is carefully considered, built upon framing, cropping, light and surface. It is precisely this tension between visual immediacy and formal sophistication that gives his work its singular place in the history of American figuration. Neither strictly Pop nor merely realist, Alex Katz has developed an art of presence: a silent, frontal and elegant painting in which the contemporary image recovers something of the permanence of classical portraiture.
