Érik Desmazières, born on 21 November 1948 in Rabat, Morocco, is a French watercolourist based in Paris.
He spent his childhood in Morocco before coming to France to study at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris in 1967 from which he graduated in 1971. He spent a few months at the École spéciale d'architecture de Paris. Realising that this was not his path, he took engraving classes with Jean Delpech in Paris and met many engravers such as Yves Doaré, François Houtin and Philippe Mohlitz.
He decided to make it his profession in 1972, with the encouragement of Philippe Mohlitz. His work was then promoted by the American dealer Andy Fitch (who published a catalogue raisonné in four volumes), as well as by Arsène Bonafous-Murat, Michèle Broutta, François Ditesheim, the Galleria del Leone, Larry Warnock and Armstrong Fine Art.
He is a member of the editorial board of Nouvelles de l'estampe and, since 2006, president of the Société des peintres-graveurs français.
On 9 April 2008, he was elected to the Académie des beaux-arts in the engraving section in chair number I after the death of Jean-Marie Granier; he was received under the dome by Hugues Gall on 14 October 2009, during a solemn session chaired by the sculptor Antoine Poncet.
