Mark Kostabi is an American artist born in 1960 in Los Angeles. His parents are of Estonian origin.
He moved to New York in 1982 and quickly became a fixture of the East Village art scene.
His paintings of faceless figures often comment on contemporary political, social and psychological issues, and have visual stylistic roots in the work of Giorgio de Chirico and Fernand Léger.
Kostabi has entered into collaborations with other artists including Enzo Cucchi, Tadanori Yokoo, Enrico Baj.
Since 1996, Kostabi has divided his time between Rome and New York.
Kostabi's work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery in Washington DC, the Yale University Art Gallery.
