Follow GEN PAUL
Eugène Paul, known as Gen Paul, was born in Paris in 1895 where he died in 1975. Coming from a popular milieu, he learns painting as a self-taught by bathing his production with scenes of his Montmartre daily: balls, views of Paris that will earn him to be considered one of the many «painters of Montmartre» that he rubs assiduously, Just like Utrillo.
Gen Paul developed a style with plural influences, marked by the avant-gardists of the passage of the century – Toulouse-Lautrec, led by Van Gogh – as well as by his contemporaries – his friend Juan Gris, Picasso’s cubism, Vlaminck’s colour and touch. Cleverly, sometimes to the extreme, distorting the reality he observes, using vivid colours with symbolic and eloquent tones, Gen Paul is often considered an expressionist painter, whose impaled painter, coupled with a highly expressive gestural intensity bring him closer to the art of a Chaïm Soutine.
