Follow Gustave-Adolphe Mossa
Gustave-Adolphe Mossa (Nice, 1883 – 1971) is a major figure of late Symbolism whose work reflects the aesthetic and moral tensions of the turn of the twentieth century. The son of the painter Alexis Mossa, a renowned landscape artist and an important figure in the artistic life of Nice, he received a solid academic training while evolving in a milieu receptive to European Symbolism.
Between 1900 and the First World War, Mossa produced the greater part of his painted oeuvre, marked by allegory and satire. His compositions are often populated with enigmatic female figures — sphinxes, courtesans, virgins, or femmes fatales. Influenced by Gustave Moreau, Félicien Rops, and the Pre-Raphaelites, he developed a meticulously detailed visual world in which refined ornamentation serves an imagination rich in literary, mythological, and religious references. His works offer a sharp critique of contemporary morals, particularly of urban modernity and the social transformations of the Belle Époque.
After 1914, Mossa gradually abandoned easel painting. He devoted himself primarily to heritage and administrative responsibilities in Nice, notably as curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, while continuing his activity as a draughtsman and illustrator.
Rediscovered at the end of the twentieth century, Gustave-Adolphe Mossa is today regarded as a major representative of late Symbolism whose work also bears witness to the traumas of the First World War.
