Piero Dorazio is an Italian painter born in Rome in 1927. He is one of the fathers of Italian abstraction.
At a very young age, Piero Dorazio took part in the movement of ideas that shook the peninsula at the Liberation. After the war, Dorazio worked briefly as a translator for the British army and then studied architecture at the University of Rome. Together with friends (Guerrini, Perilli, Vespignani...) Dorazio formed the Arte sociale group, which aspired to a social and cultural renewal of Italy. The group's first exhibition took place in March 1946 in Rome, in an Italian Socialist Party building.
In 1947, Dorazio won a prize and a scholarship from the French government to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Described as a "frank and independent character" who was "the opposite of politically correct", Dorazio's use of materials and colours has remained constant over time. He is best known for his paintings with thick bands of bright colours and cross-hatched grids. Although abstract, his paintings do not neglect detail or complexity. His style is in line with what Clement Greenberg later described as "post-painting abstraction".
