Follow Robert DELAUNAY
Robert Delaunay (1885, Paris – 1941, Montpellier) was initially influenced by Neo-Impressionism and its exploration of colour and light. He later moved away from this approach and developed his work around Orphism—a geometric study of simultaneous contrasts of colour—which became central to his artistic practice. Progressively embracing abstraction, he notably produced the celebrated “Disques” series in the 1920s.
The term Orphism was coined by Guillaume Apollinaire, a great admirer and supporter of the artist, in reference to the poetic song of Orpheus.
Drawing on the Cubist synthesis of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, Robert Delaunay and his wife Sonia Delaunay sought to express the movement and rhythm of modern life.
Among his most renowned works is the Eiffel Tower series, in which he reinterprets the Parisian landmark through a kaleidoscope of forms and colours. He also explored the relationship between art and technology, as seen in works inspired by aviation and urban development.
A pioneering figure of abstraction, Robert Delaunay profoundly shaped the history of modern art and influenced numerous artists of his time and subsequent generations.
