A leading figure of Surrealism, Man Ray created the original painting of The Misunderstood in 1938, at a time marked by the rise of Nazism and Fascism and by the denunciation of modern art as “degenerate” in Germany. Of Ashkenazi Jewish origin and closely linked to the Surrealist circle, he worked in a climate of political tension and uncertainty, shortly before his exile to the United States in 1940.
Reinterpreted as a lithograph in 1962, the image preserves the disturbing, dreamlike intensity of the original composition. The hybrid figure, inspired by the bird-of-paradise flower, becomes an enigmatic presence with a single eye and an elongated beak, set within a silent, unreal landscape. Its formal strangeness and its anxious, almost nightmarish atmosphere fully express Man Ray’s Surrealist vision, rooted in metamorphosis, the uncanny, and the poetry of the unconscious.
