Illustration for Verve magazine, issues 35–36, dedicated to Matisse’s later works
This Blue Nude, folded inward in a contemplative pose, appears to be the result of a long process of simplification. Just a few cut-out shapes are enough to suggest the weight of the body, the curve of the back, and the balance of the posture. The extreme economy of means contrasts with the richness of the presence achieved. Through this figure reduced to its essentials, Matisse achieves a remarkable synthesis of monumentality and simplicity, turning the human body into an instantly recognizable universal symbol.
