While California’s youth have made the flower a symbol of protest, Mithé Espelt chooses to use it on an everyday object. Tulips, daisies, and stylized flowers follow one another in rhythm within their black, gold-accented cells, punctuated by a vibrant turquoise blue that draws as much from Mediterranean folk art as from the emerging psychedelic movement. The circular composition itself resonates with the flower power imagination: repetitive and hypnotic. Deeply attuned to the liberation movements of her time, Espelt creates here one of her most politically charged works. To look at this mirror is to contemplate an era in which beauty was pitted against violence and color against monotony.
