In the early 1950s, forced by illness to give up the easel, Henri Matisse invented with his gouache cut-outs a new way of "drawing in color." The famous Blue Nudes of 1952 are among its high points. In Nu bleu aux bas verts, the female figure, cut from an intense blue, comes alive with green legs and engages in a dialogue with a pink and red plant motif. The form, simplified to the extreme, retains all its sensuality and movement. This posthumous lithograph, made after the paper cut-out, conveys the brilliance and freedom of this final period.
