Created in 1958, this original color lithograph comes from a turning point in Chagall’s career. That year he began work on the stained-glass windows of Metz Cathedral with master glassmaker Charles Marq, and his new research into light carried straight into the prints he was making at Mourlot in Paris. Under a deep blue night sky, less a landscape than a dreamscape, a large rooster towers over a female nude. Trees, a fish and moonlit figures drift around them, free of any perspective. Flashes of red, yellow and green don’t outline shapes so much as set them vibrating, the way light glows through stained glass. The rooster, a recurring presence in Chagall’s art since the 1920s, here blends the folk imagery of his native Vitebsk with romantic desire and the promise of dawn. Chagall never explained these symbols. He kept rearranging them, like words in a personal language built from memory and color.
