The Battle of the Argonne, a World War I offensive, evokes a world of violence and destruction. Yet the work is one of absolute silence: two forms facing each other against a clear sky, without conflict, without apparent tension. This disconnect between the title and the image is typically Magrittean: the word does not describe; it shifts meaning. The “battle” is perhaps the one between what things are and what they seem to be. A confrontation with no victor, suspended outside of time.
