Created toward the end of Niki de Saint Phalle's career, Totem brings together the major themes that define her oeuvre. Its references to Portrait of My Lover, the Nanas, and Hon are more than instances of self-reference: they place the work within a retrospective reflection in which the artist revisits the formative stages of her artistic journey. This personal narrative unfolds around the figure of the totem, a symbol of protection and mediation between worlds, inspired by the cosmologies that shaped her imagination during the final years of her life. The skull that dominates the composition evokes both death and renewal, while the spider and the bat embody deeply personal fears that the artist deliberately transformed into cathartic motifs. By bringing together artistic memories, personal symbolism, and spiritual references, Totem emerges as a synthesis in which artistic creation becomes a means of giving coherence to both a life and an artistic practice.
