Illustration for Verve magazine, issues 35–36, dedicated to Matisse’s later works

Venus demonstrates Matisse’s ability to maintain a rare balance between representation and simplification. The subject remains instantly recognizable: a body, a pose, a human presence. Yet the figure is reduced to a handful of elementary shapes whose arrangement comes close to abstraction. This tension is one of the major accomplishments of his later works. Matisse preserves the full expressive power of the nude while moving it toward a visual language based on the pure organization of forms in space.
