In the final years of his life, Max Ernst continued to explore printmaking with undiminished inventiveness, reworking the techniques that had set him apart within Surrealism: frottage, collage, and imaginary scripts. This 1975 lithograph belongs to that late vein, in which the artist summons the world of books and knowledge only to subvert it. The title evokes a dreamed library rather than a real place, at once a reservoir of memory and a playground for the imagination. Here we find the humor, the taste for mystery, and the poetic freedom that run through his entire body of work.
