In 1961, Masson was not simply paying tribute to Saint-Pol-Roux; he was also honoring André Breton himself and the collective reinterpretation that transformed a marginalized poet into a guiding figure of Surrealism. The print thus functions as a memorial palimpsest, layering the image of the Symbolist poet, the legend of the scandalous Banquet, and the belated recognition of an artist who, working alone in his studio, had chosen his path long before the official history of the movement gave him his rightful place.
