In 1961, Masson was not merely paying tribute to Saint-Pol-Roux; he was also honouring André Breton himself and the collective reappraisal that had transformed a marginalised poet into one of Surrealism’s guiding figures. The print thus functions as a memorial palimpsest, where the image of the Symbolist poet, the legend of the scandalous Banquet, and the belated recognition of an artist who, alone in his studio, had already chosen his path long before the official history of the movement acknowledged him, are layered upon one another.
