A painter, illustrator, and printmaker, Lucien Fontanarosa developed an elegant and sensitive figurative style, nourished by his travels and a solid classical culture. Venice, with its canals, shifting light, and gondoliers, was among his favorite subjects. In this lithograph, a group of gondoliers stands on the quay, captured in a hazy atmosphere of browns, ochers, and bluish grays. The light, precise drawing catches their poses with accuracy, while the city dissolves into the mist. The work poetically conveys the melancholy and timeless charm of La Serenissima.
