In "À l'imprimerie", Pierre Alechinsky builds on the explorations he began during his stay in Japan in 1955. His discovery of calligraphy transformed his relationship to the line, which he now conceived as a continuous gesture engaging the entire body.
The composition in vignettes, reminiscent of a comic strip, is here stripped of any narrative function. Their internal treatment—composed of flat areas, negative space, and rapid strokes—reflects a Japanese calligraphic sensibility. The gesture thus ensures a flow between the fragments, articulating division and unity within the same visual dynamic.
