In "À l'imprimerie", Pierre Alechinsky builds on the explorations he began during his stay in Japan in 1955. His discovery of calligraphy transformed his relationship with the line, which he now conceived as a continuous gesture involving the whole body.
The composition in vignettes, reminiscent of comic strips, is here stripped of any narrative function. Their internal treatment, consisting of flat areas, negative spaces and rapid lines, draws on a Japanese calligraphic sensibility. The gesture thus ensures a flow between the fragments, articulating division and unity within the same visual dynamic.
