MAN RAY

Man Ray (1890–1976), born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, was one of the major figures of modern art, Dada, and Surrealism in the 20th century. An American artist who moved to Paris in 1921, he became closely associated with Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tzara, André Breton, and many of the leading figures of the Paris avant-garde.

A painter, photographer, draftsman, filmmaker, and object artist, Man Ray refused to limit his creativity to any single medium. He became especially famous for his experimental photography, including his celebrated Rayographs, photographic images created without a camera by placing objects directly onto light-sensitive paper.

His work is also closely associated with solarization, portraits of important artists and writers, and iconic Surrealist works such as Cadeau and Object to Be Destroyed. Although photography played a central role in his career, Man Ray considered himself first and foremost an independent artist, constantly exploring new techniques and forms of expression.

In addition to photography and objects, Man Ray created numerous drawings, etchings, lithographs, and original prints. His graphic works explore recurring themes found throughout his career: the human body, chance, dreams, eroticism, transformed everyday objects, and the freedom of imagination.

Today, Man Ray artworks, including photographs, paintings, sculptures, lithographs, etchings, and original prints, are held in major museum and private collections around the world. His work remains a defining expression of the Paris avant-garde, Dada, and Surrealism.
