Fernand Léger (1881-1955) was one of the earliest representatives of Cubism. A particular cubism, often called tubism, in reference to the tubular shapes that characterized its patterns.
In 1925, he exhibited in the L’Esprit Nouveau pavilion built by Le Corbusier, during the memorable International Exhibition in Paris. Léger produced works in large formats, notably that of the United Nations in New York in 1952 and distinguished himself in many techniques; stained glass, mosaic, ceramics and of course printmaking. The title of the lithograph that we are offering, Composition murale, recalls Léger's taste for wall surfaces. Nothing figurative, but curved, volute, geometric shapes animated by an energy, almost a movement, reinforced by the colors, few in number and subtly derived from the primary colors. The black outline highlights both the composition and the colors. Léger was very exacting about the final color rendering and closely watched the prints, as Fernand Mourlot, from the eponymous workshop where Léger produced the vast majority of his engraved work, points out.
