From the "Méchant-Méchant" album
A self-taught, multidisciplinary artist, Niki de Saint-Phalle creates a world recognizable at first glance. She is best known for her Nanas, monumental sculptures of disproportionately shaped women, which she designed to be displayed in public spaces for all to see. The artist attaches great importance to the beneficial potential of art, which takes on an almost therapeutic dimension for her: "My passion is to bring some moments of joy to others through my art".
In this lithograph, the artist addresses the children. She uses one of the illustrations created the same year for the book "Méchant Méchant", in collaboration with the author Laurent Condominas. It is a story about triumphant friendship, where children help each other to recover their toys stolen by a monster. By its graphic form and its colors, we can easily approach its style of art made by children, which reinforces the impact it can have with them.
Here the artist shows us a merchant, who behind her counter, displays the typical attributes of Nanas. The scene could be taken from everyday life except for the reptiles that threaten her. Despite the childlike character of this lithograph, it reminds us with a certain violence that danger lurks.
