Follow Otmar ALT
Otmar Alt is a German painter, draughtsman, designer and sculptor, born in 1940 in Wernigerode.
He is a renowned and versatile contemporary artist. Always eager to experiment and looking for new artistic challenges, he does not limit his work to painting and graphic arts.
He transcends the boundaries of the different genres of visual art and, in so doing, repeatedly enters the marginal areas of artistic work. He designs, among other things, high-quality tableware, glass lamps, facades and windows. He also creates designs for theatre sets, sets and costumes.
Otmar Alt always remains true to his unique visual language. His imaginative works often appear superficially cheerful and playful. The versatility of form and design reflects his joy of experimentation, curiosity and exuberance. Yet his artworks are never without depth. A closer look reveals deep and complex stories that make the viewer think.
He plays an important role in the cultural life of Hamm. His sculptures, which can be seen all over the city, reveal this. In addition, he designed Hamm's library.
In 1998 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In 2003, Alt designed the first Buddy Bear, which was presented to a large audience in early 2004 in a major Otmar Alt exhibition in the Kronprinz Palace (Berlin).
