There are a few examples of monochrome paintings in white, black and gray colors in the work of Serge Poliakoff, one of the most remarkable colorists of the 20th century.
Monochrome and its variations evoke the depth of a color without color, far from signifying the absence of it. The gentle gradation of tones as well as the always surprising interweaving of shapes give this lithograph musical qualities. We think in particular of Claude Debussy who described his Nocturnes in 1894 as “an experience of the different combinations that can be obtained with a single color – which would be a study in gray in painting”.
