On this porcelain plate published by Artcurial, Sonia Delaunay has created a motif based on a diagonal of circles in the center, flanked by semicircles. The result is an impression of each color obstructing the other. This impression is reinforced by the complementary nature of green and red, which seem to oppose as well as superimpose each other. The circular movement thus created is fluid, serpentine, as if spinning on itself like a double ellipse.
The work is reminiscent of Delaunay's interest in the performing arts, particularly dance. It's worth noting that the Delaunay couple went into exile in Madrid and Porto at the turn of the century, where they discovered flamenco, a dance that was to prove a prime source of inspiration for Sonia Delaunay. In 1934, for example, she produced an oil on canvas entitled Danse, rythme sans fin, which is now on display at the Centre Pompidou. The oil painting presents a motif similar to our work, with a rhythm of movement that contains a certain sensuality and lyrical passion.
