This work by French painter Jean Miotte (1926-2016), a representative of lyrical abstraction, is characteristic of his late period, beginning around 1990. It is so fisrt by the use of monumental format, which the artist favored in order to stretch out wide expanses of color using acrylic paint, which had become his preferred medium. Acrylic paint allows the material to spread out more widely, while maintaining the intensity of the pigment.

Here, Miotte breaks with his "white period" of the 1970s, but retains a certain sobriety, particularly as he reduces his color palette to blue, red and yellow, cheerful hues that contrast sharply with each other and with the surface of the canvas. From now on, he also separates color from the writing inspired by Chinese calligraphy. The former becomes the background, while the latter is transmuted into black signs, applied last with a brush.

Attention is naturally drawn to the gestures, enhanced by the rhythm Miotte composes. Movement, like dance and music, is fundamental to him, bringing balance and tension to the components of his work, such as his conception of life: "We're always caught between these two things: the pain of being and the euphoria of living".
