Etching, aquatint and carborundum on Guarro vellum
Paper slightly yellowed
In this etching, Joan Miró pushes technical experimentation to its peak, virtuously blending etching, aquatint and carborundum. Since the 1930s, the artist has constantly explored the expressive resources of etching, finding in it a veritable field for plastic invention. Here, the rough textures of carborundum contrast with the delicacy of etching, creating a living, almost organic material.
The sinuous shapes that run through the composition seem to emerge from an original chaos. They evoke both imaginary constellations and microscopic organisms, in a universe where the infinitely large dialogues with the infinitely small. The surface of the paper becomes a cosmos in gestation, vibrating with the energy of gesture and chance.
