Created in 1958, Valley occupies a significant place in the development of Anna-Eva Bergman's artistic vocabulary. The fine lines that structure the composition reflect the artist's desire to reduce the landscape to its purest form. This motif of the valley, refined to the point of becoming a symbol, reflects Bergman's growing interest in elementary forms inspired by her observations of Norwegian landscapes.
The golden background refers directly to the artist's research into metallic materials at the time, inspired by the medieval gold leaf technique that Christian Lange had introduced her to in 1942. Transposed to engraving, this metallic light gives the work a special vibration: it does not illuminate the scene, but emanates from it, affirming the sacred and universal dimension that Bergman attributes to nature in his pantheistic conception.
