Ernst composes the space as an impossible learning environment: a ghostly student, a statue-like teacher, distorted landmarks. Logic falters, and it is precisely this failure that establishes this school. Like the Dadaist collages and Surrealist research that shaped his thinking, the artist creates a pedagogy of the absurd in which the viewer becomes a pirate, plucking meanings from the dark seas of the unconscious.
