Drawing from the stained-glass windows created for the Hadassah Hospital synagogue in Jerusalem, Chagall embarked in 1964 on a series of twelve lithographs inspired by the Tribes of Israel. In the one dedicated to Zebulun, he reimagines the original composition, transforming the clarity of glass into chromatic bursts and poetic visions. This transition from stained glass to printmaking allowed him to explore the power of colour and the spiritual dimension of the Genesis narrative, in an interpretation both intimate and universal.
In a composition dominated by deep reds, vibrant blues and greens, two fish leap toward one another in a circular motion, forming a graceful arc at the centre of the image. Below, a ship glides over a gently rippled sea, while on the horizon the sun appears to rise from the waterline. At the top, Hebrew letters spelling “Zebulun” lend the scene a sacred resonance, recalling the biblical source of the work.
Here, Chagall deploys his characteristic pictorial language: saturated colours, floating figures, and a fusion of the earthly and the celestial. By translating the stained glass into lithography, he pays tribute to the light and faith that illuminate his entire oeuvre, weaving memory, tradition, and inner vision into a symphony of form and symbol.
