From Vulcanalogies, Seven cases of lithographic eruption observed by Alechinsky on June 19, 1970, in Paris at 19 Rue Vieille du Temple
A copy is in the collection of the Centre Pompidou museum (inv. AM 1976-128 (7))
The eruption does not burst forth in flames, but rises in clouds: slow, dense puffs of ochre and white, rising like silent witnesses to the underground turmoil. These forms float between menace and lightness, suspended in a sky that has become the theater of the phenomenon. Alechinsky's supple and lively line is inherited from Japanese calligraphy: it captures the vertical dynamic, the thrust of the ground, the rising breath, the dissolving form. The aesthetics of emptiness and fullness give this violence an incandescent elegance.
