Serge Poliakoff's spirit of formal innovation unfolds both in a linear manner, with the writing of a pictorial language, and through experiments taking the place of exceptions, as is the case for this engraving in size. gentle. This was executed in collaboration with the artist Jean Signovert (1919-1981), a remarkable engraver of the School of Paris, in order to illustrate Parmenides, Plato's famous dialogue.

Poliakoff here composes a dialogue between geometric elements that he generally uses little. The circular motif only appears sporadically from the 1950s and the triangle is even more rarely represented in his work. These shapes, very clearly delineated in flat areas of color, contrast with his more usual use of irregular shapes marked by the transparency of the material. It thus creates a careful balance between the strongly contrasting black and white segments. It does the same with the complementary colors orange and blue. Its final composition, airy and with palpable depth, arouses the effervescence of the form.
