With Flore et Faune, Zao Wou-Ki explores the possibilities of printmaking, which he was discovering at the time in Paris under Desjobert’s guidance. Still attached to figuration, he creates a landscape where gaunt trees and delicate plants mingle with signs that evoke both a poetic herbarium and a set of calligraphic characters — a direct echo of the Shang dynasty bronzes that had fascinated him since childhood.
In this carefully constructed depth of space, a few human silhouettes emerge only to lose themselves among the forest and its discreet animals. The artist confronts the smallness of humankind in the face of Nature’s immensity, questioning our place within this vast universe.
