This lithograph dated from 1952 his title, Jour de fête, is also the title of the movie by Jacques Tati, released three years earlier, in 1949. Should we see in the two circles of our work the wheels of the famous cycliste, the postman in the movie? We cannot tell. What is certain, however: this lithograph in seven colors puts you in a good mood. The assertive but soft colors serve curved and dynamic shapes. Maurice Estève (1904-1986) is at the best of his artistic form. He very quickly overcame the difficulties of the lithographic technique, so different from oil painting. There is no longer hierarchy between the two techniques, as Dora Vallier reminds us in the catalog raisonné of the engraved work of Estève. Estève has made few engravings, each of them requires to him intense concentration, necessary to achieve balance and power which are in a way the conditions for harmony.
