Niki de Saint Phalle never shunned her demons: she confronted them by transfiguring them. In a 1996 lecture entitled “Niki de Saint Phalle. Reflections on her Art” at the University of San Diego, the artist returned to the importance of creating a monstrous creature in a playground. She explained that it was a way for children to conquer their fears, to transform something terrifying into something fun and playful. The massive, frightening appearance that spits children out of the Golem's red mouth could have locked it into its role as a monster, but Niki de Saint Phalle decided otherwise. Through color and playfulness, she tames and reinvents the Golem, inviting us to do the same with our own fears.
