This work is one of fifteen artist’s proofs (EA 8/15), signed in ink by Pierre Soulages. It includes a handwritten dedication by the artist to Daniel Abadie, art critic and exhibition curator. The screen print was published as part of the original edition of Sur le mur d’en face (1979), a rare and important publication that brings together text and image in a dialogue emblematic of Soulages’ artistic vision.

This 1979 screen print is part of Pierre Soulages’ ongoing exploration of light born from black. The work contrasts a deep black plane with a striated red surface, created through rubbing, revealing the texture of both gesture and support. As Pierre Encrevé explains, black in Soulages’ work is a substance of light, not darkness. The interplay between opacity and vibration generates a powerful visual tension. The vertical format, common in Soulages’ oeuvre, evokes a sense of totemic presence—an architecture of primal form. Printed in an edition of 100, this is one of 15 artist’s proofs (EA 8/15), signed by the artist. It was gifted with a handwritten dedication to Daniel Abadie, art critic and exhibition curator.
