Whereas Soulages applies paint in broad brushstrokes and then removes material, here he merely suggests these same gestures with aquatint. This technique progressively reveals a striking midnight blue superimposed on a broad black curve, giving the work a unique dimensionality.
As usual, Soulages places the pictorial experience at the heart of his abstraction. He concentrates on gesture, fullness and emptiness, materials and, ultimately, light. He confronts us with a stripping away of matter, an innovation that has left a profound mark on the history of modern art.
