Through the erosion of copper, Soulages brings out a renewed relationship between matter and man.
In this etching, the subtractive gesture becomes a founding act: it's no longer a question of adding, but of removing, of revealing. The white of the paper enters into tension with the copper-red print, whose altered texture and corroded horizontality suggest a slow, worked time, when the metal retains the memory of the gesture.
